On July 10, hundreds of graduates from across the world will convene in Albany, New York for Excelsior College’s 2015 Commencement, to be held at the Empire State Plaza in downtown Albany, New York. “Commencement Stories” explores the stories of a few of this year’s notable graduates.

Sheena M. Ross, Excelsior College Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice graduate.
U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Sheena M. Ross of Smithers, British Columbia, is a recipient of the Arthur J. Gregg Award, presented to a student who is on active duty in the U.S. Military and who demonstrates outstanding academic and career or professional achievement. Ross earned a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice in 2014 with a 3.97 GPA, graduating summa cum laude.
While taking courses at Excelsior, she worked full-time as an active-duty Air Force paralegal at Joint Base Elmendor-Richardson (JBER) in Alaska. Based on the recommendation of her former installation commander, she was the recipient of a local scholarship from the Miss Alaska Scholarship Foundation in recognition of her academic achievement and community involvement.
Ross has given back to the community as the president of JBER’s first-ever Airman’s Council and helped raise more than $5,000 in support of the Anchorage Food Bank, Fisher House, and various morale and welfare events for the airmen stationed at the base.
Among her military honors are the 2015 Airman of the Year; the 2014 Airman of the 1st Quarter; and the 2013 Airman of the 2nd Quarter. Ross also was recognized as Distinguished Graduate during Airman Leadership School, graduating in the top 10 percent of her class. She was also chosen to travel with the JBER Wing Commander and Command Chief to Washington, DC, to reinforce the Air Force’s relationship with the congressional delegation.
