Excelsior College has announced a new academic partnership with the non-profit organization, Black Nurses Rock.
Black Nurses Rock is the largest black nurse organization in the country, serving 3,000 paid members, and with a following of more than 200,000 nurses and student nurses. Its mission is to: inspire and empower innovative leaders that will serve and educate vulnerable communities, increase the presence of black nurses in higher education, and to improve diversity within universities and colleges.
Only 9.9 percent of nurses identify as black or African American (non-Hispanic), and of this percentile, 14.6 percent have related masters or doctoral degrees. Excelsior College is committed to serving traditional and non-traditional students from diverse backgrounds by providing them with pathways for educational access.
“I am extremely excited to partner with Excelsior and bring the wonderful benefits to our paid membership,” said Romeatrius Moss, founder, Black Nurses Rock. “This will enhance our mission to inspire more black nurses to achieve higher education and position themselves for leadership opportunities and advocates for their communities.”
Under this agreement, association members and their spouses or domestic partners are eligible for reduced tuition and fees for associate, bachelor’s, and master’s degree programs in the School of Nursing, such as Excelsior’s RN to BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing), RN to MSN (Master of Science in Nursing), and other nursing certificate programs.
Excelsior College is an accredited, nonprofit college that specializes in serving the needs of working adults. It provides flexible means for its students – average age of 37 – to earn their degrees through a combination of prior earned credit, Excelsior’s online courses and credit-by-exam program, and evaluated industry and military training programs. Excelsior College’s largest academic program is the associate degree program in nursing with over 16,000 enrolled students.
“Excelsior is committed to providing educational opportunities to learners of all ages, in particular those historically underrepresented in higher education,” said Chris Normile, healthcare partnership manager, Excelsior College. “Black Nurses Rock presents a natural alignment in our core mission.”
