In January 2016, Excelsior Cares was created as a community relations program built to expand the College’s mission to serve the underserved beyond the virtual classroom by assisting with the critical needs of the community, via shared time (volunteerism), shared talent (skills), and shared treasure (financial contributions).
Dedicated to the belief that a strong social fabric creates opportunity, our core community engagement initiatives focus on five key areas: health and wellness, lifelong education, diversity and inclusion, veterans/military, and social and economic justice to reach from New York’s Capital Region to worldwide, to show Excelsior Cares.
The College supports employee volunteerism beyond mere words. Each employee is offered two days of paid time off to participate in volunteer and community service activities during normal work days. In 2016, our employees volunteered 563 hours during the workday to more than 40 causes. (Excelsior Cares means helping others throughout the year). In 2017, 593.5 hours of Volunteer Time Off (VTO) helped to serve the needs of 55 different nonprofit organizations.
