In 2012, Dr. Gerol Petruzella, coordinator of academic technology at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, redeveloped an existing freshman philosophy course into a semester-long immersive role-playing game, Dungeons & Discourse.
Although offered as a face-to-face course at a small liberal arts college, the course is in fact natively hybrid, with most course activities and frameworks offered online, in a robustly integrated game environment. The course has run twice since its development and already been awarded grants from NEA/Microsoft and the Awesome Foundation.
As part of Excelsior College’s third annual symposium on the use of games in higher education, Dr. Petruzella will be on campus to present on how game theory and principles inform the design and implementation of an engaging, blended-learning, primarily online undergraduate course.
The presentation, scheduled for April 28, 11 am – 12 pm eastern, will be streamed online for free to those who register.

Dr. Gerol Petruzella
Dr. Gerol Petruzella is coordinator of academic technology, and adjunct philosophy instructor, at the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in North Adams, Massachusetts. He holds a PhD in Philosophy, specializing in ethics and ancient Greek literature.
A digital humanist, his current research interests include game design and the ethics of open-source frameworks in higher education. His book, Durable Goods (2013), investigates paradoxes in virtue ethics, a method of moral-decision-making dating back to the fourth century BCE.
Dr. Petruzella teaches a range of courses, including seminars in personal identity, ancient Greek language, logic, and Aristotle.
Excelsior College and Educational Gaming
Dr. Petruzella’s presentation will highlight the third annual Excelsior College symposium, which will include gaming professional development seminars for Excelsior faculty.
“Games and the Curriculum: Towards a New Educational Model”, the second annual Excelsior College symposium addressing the role of games in education, was held on Friday, May 17, 2013 and included a wide-range of educational technology thought leaders from across the country. More than 300 attendees participated at a distance.
