Dr. George Timmons, new dean of Excelsior College’s School of Liberal Arts.
Excelsior College announces the appointment of Dr. George Timmons, as dean of the School of Liberal Arts. Timmons will continue to serve as associate provost for the Center for Learning and Academic Services, and recently served as interim co-dean for the School of Liberal Arts with Dr. Patrick Jones. Dr. Timmons came to Excelsior College in 2004 as the founding dean of the Center for Online Education and Learning Services and was instrumental in building an infrastructure to support the delivery of Excelsior’s online programs.
“George brings a unique combination of skills and experience in the areas of online course development, student services, higher education administration, and strategic planning,” stated Mary Beth Hanner, provost and chief academic officer. I anticipate that these skills, combined with his knowledge of the needs of adult learners, will create an environment conducive to innovation and student success.”
In his prior role, Timmons worked with the School’s faculty program directors, academic advisors and staff to facilitate and nurture academic excellence. He has skills in Web-based learning management, developing academic policy, managing curriculum, and developing academic programs. His expertise is in managing distance learning programs, adult/continuing education, and overseeing learning services.
Timmons says, “My focus is on achieving results by convening stakeholders, facilitating consensus, and using empirical information to form initiatives, meeting strategic organizational goals. I am committed to mutually beneficial processes and shared governance through the clear communication of issues, goals, and strategies.”
Outside of work, Timmons has served as an American Council Education Fellow (class 2013) a prestigious program design to develop professionals for senior leadership roles in higher education. Timmons also served as assistant dean at North Carolina Wesleyan College and site director at Old Dominion University (VA).
Timmons received his doctorate in higher education from Bowling Green State University (OH), his Master of Science in Education from Old Dominion University (VA), and his Bachelor of Science in finance from Norfolk State University (VA). He also attended the Harvard Institute for Management and Leadership in Education.
