Deborah Sopczyk, PhD, RN will serve as Excelsior College’s next Provost and Chief Academic Officer, the institution announced today.
Dr. Sopczyk was appointed Interim Provost in September of 2016 after Dr. Mary Beth Hanner stepped aside due to health reasons.
“Dr. Sopczyk has earned the trust of her colleagues by leading by example and confidently embracing new challenges and we are proud to make her appointment to Provost oﬃcial,” said Excelsior College President James Baldwin.
The Provost serves as the College’s visionary academic leader. In her role, Dr. Sopczyk will work collaboratively with students, administrators, and faculty to continue to create high quality, accessible, academic experience for all students.
Dr. Sopczyk has an extensive background in the nursing field. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from State University of New York (SUNY) College at Plattsburgh and a Master of Science in Child Health Nursing from SUNY Buffalo. Sopczyk received her doctorate in social welfare from the University at Albany.
Dr. Sopczyk joined Excelsior College within the School of Nursing in 1984. She would serve the College in a variety of capacities, eventually being named Dean of the School of Health Sciences in 2007.
